According to the Swedish Education System you can, within the third cycle, study towards either a Doctoral Degree or a Licentiate Degree
Four years of study, leading to a Doctoral Degree, normally consists of courses and a thesis. The thesis must be published and publicly defended. Third-cycle education is offered by all faculties at the University of Gothenburg. A Doctoral degree is worth 240 credits.
After half of the study period, the programme may be concluded with a licentiate degree. A licentiate degree is worth 120 credits.
