All courses and programmes at Swedish universities are divided into three cycles. Each degree belongs to one of these cycles.
To qualify for a "högskoleexamen" (Higher Education Diploma) you must have completed courses adding up to 120 credits, including a defined main field of studies. You must have completed consecutive courses adding up to at least 60 credits (including one degree project worth at least 7.5 credits) in one of the university's main fields of study. In addition, you must also meet all of the specific requirements that may exist for a degree within your main field of study. 1.5 credits corresponds to one week of full-time studies. 60 credits represents a full academic year.
To qualify for a "kandidatexamen" (Bachelor's Degree) you must have completed courses worth 180 credits, including a defined main field of studies. You must have completed consecutive courses adding up to at least 90 credits in one of the university's main fields of study. At least 15 of these must consist of one degree project/paper. In addition, you must also meet all of the specific requirements that may exist for a degree within your main field of study. 1.5 credits corresponds to one week of full-time studies. 60 credits represents a full academic year.
All degrees at second cycle require a previous Bachelor's Degree or equivalent.
To qualify for a "magisterexamen" (Master's Degree (60 credits)), you must have completed courses adding up to 60 credits, including a defined main field of studies. You must have completed courses adding up to at least 30 credits with in-depth studies in the main field of study, including one degree project/paper worth at least 15 credits. In addition, you must also meet all of the specific requirements that may exist for a degree within your main field of study. 1.5 credits corresponds to one week of full-time studies. 60 credits represents a full academic year.
To qualify for a "masterexamen" (Master's Degree (120 credits)) you must have completed courses adding up to 120 credits, including a defined main field of studies. You must have completed courses adding up to at least 60 credits with in-depth studies in the main field of study, including one degree project/paper worth at least 30 credits or two degree projects/papers worth at least 15 credits each at second cycle. In addition, you must also meet all of the specific requirements that may exist for a degree within your main field of study. 1.5 credits corresponds to one week of full-time studies. 60 credits represents a full academic year.
There are two ways for a research student to gain a Licentiate Degree. The first is by completing an educational programme worth at least 120 credits in a subject area at third cycle of higher education. The second is by completing part of an educational programme worth at least 120 credits and which is designed to lead to a Doctoral Degree. 1.5 credits corresponds to one week of full-time studies. 60 credits represents a full academic year.
A Doctoral Degree may be granted after a research student has completed an educational programme adding up to 240 credits in a subject area at third cycle of higher education. 1.5 credits corresponds to one week of full-time studies. 60 credits represents a full academic year.
