Exchange Programmes

Nordic Exchanges

NORDPLUS (the Nordic Programme for the Mobility of University Students and Teachers). The aim is to contribute to the creation of a close-knit Nordic educational community.

EC exchange programmes  As a European Union member state, Sweden participates in all EC exchange programmes. If you are accepted on to such a programme, your accommodation will be arranged for you (look under ISO, see list of addresses at the end of the Guide) and you will receive a grant to help with your additional expenses.

Socrates

At present, the University is mainly involved in two Socrates activities focusing on student exchanges: ERASMUS and LINGUA.
ERASMUS, the European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students, comprises, among other things, student and teaching staff exchanges. The overall aim is to help improve the quality of education by enhancing European cooperation and increasing access to the range of learning opportunities available across the Union. It seeks to provide learners of all ages with insight into the wider European dimension of the subjects they are studying. ERASMUS provides students at all levels, from undergraduates to postgraduates, with the opportunity to study at a foreign university for 3-12 months and to include the credits obtained in their regular programme at their home university. Cooperative agreements within ERASMUS are signed bilaterally between universities within the European Economic Area (EEA), over the past two years, Erasmus has been extended to a number of new countries including, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovak Republic and Slovenia. Application is open only to students who have completed their first year of university studies. The selection of applicants is made by the student's home university, i.e. department or faculty.

LINGUA contains a wide range of measures designed to improve the quality of the teaching and learning of the languages of the participating countries. Like ERASMUS, LINGUA covers the EEA and is gradually being extended to new countries. Language teachers may spend a period of time as "LINGUA assistants" in a participating country. This will normally be a country where one of the official languages is the language the student teacher is studying. Contact your department for further information.

Other exchange programmes

These include TEMPUS (Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the former USSR and Mongolia), ALFA (Latin America), EU-China and EU-India. The aims of these programmes are to support the development and renewal of higher education and to encourage cooperation with universities and other institutes of higher education in the partner countries. This means that student exchanges, which are always at postgraduate level, must benefit these countries and result in long-range improvements.
